Remote Online Notarization is where documents are signed online by the signer and notarized online by the Notary. Both the signer and the Notary would be present on video and can talk to one another online using audio/video technology.
Remote Online Notarization allows you to have your documents notarized while you are in your own home or office, so you do not have to meet a notary at a set physical location. It is very convenient basically; the notarization takes place digitally. The time that the notarization takes place would be agreed upon by both the Notary and the signer.
A signer would use their computer mouse to sign the document and the Notary would use their computer mouse to notarize the documents. The signer would pay for the notarization using a credit or debit card. Once the notarization is complete, the signer would get their notarized documents sent to them via email where they can print them out.
Remote Online Notarizations (RON) can be very secure because they use multiple levels of identification. Different security checks help to identify the authenticity of the signer noting that the signer is who they say they are. There are several forms of authentication. First, there is authentication by ID Verification. ID verification is where you upload your government-approved ID to the RON platform and have it pass security checks.
There is also authenticity by Knowledge Based Authentication, also known as KBA. KBA is where signers are asked a series of questions based on public information about them. These are questions that are personally known by the signer. The signer would have a certain amount of time to answer the questions correctly.
Biometrics also makes sure that the signer is who they say they are. Biometrics uses facial recognition software to scan a signer’s face to authenticate the signer. Often a biometrics face scan is matched up against a government photo ID to determine that the signer’s face is the same on both.
With the convenience of Remote Online Notarization (RON) and the ability to authenticate a signer through several secure identification techniques, it has become a popular vehicle for notarization for both Notaries and their signers.
